Ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation: strengthening the evidence and informing policy

Ecosystem services can make an important contribution to increase resilience against the impacts of climate change. The project examined the effectiveness of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) to the impacts of climate change. It created a basis for making decisions on international agreements, makes the development of national adaptation plans (NAP) available and influences their design. The project focused on EbA projects in up to twelve countries in Asia, Central America, Africa and South America. Based on this analysis, appropriate policy recommendations were developed in cooperation with local partners, who are closely networked with the national planning processes. Among other channels, the dissemination of the results takes place via the Nairobi Work Programme the UNFCCC Adaptation Committee. The results are also shared at NAP events, in scientific journals, on existing knowledge platforms and in adaptation networks, ensuring that EbA measures are included in the broad international discussions.

  • Published four case studies on how to channel finance to scale-up EbA implementation in storymap format: Money where it matters for nature and climate: Financing EbA lessons from China, Peru, Uganda and South Africa
  • How to ensure effective finance delivery mechanism to scale up EbA: South Africa case study of Small Grants Facility (SGF) published; the case study for China, Peru and Uganda are being finalized and will be published in 2022.
  • Project case study from China is included in a new report developed with partners of the CAN_UK NbS working group.
  • Published an analysis of nature in NDC in South Africa.
  • The project published a podcast which explains the importance to include nature in NDCs and how to increase ambition and action for nature and climate featuring project partners in South Africa, Uganda and Peru (over 800 listens).
  • Launch of a web-based navigator for instruments at the IUCN World Conservation Congress.
  • Project results were featured in IIED Annual Review incl. a video (listed below).
  • In collaboration with FEBA members, a photo and video gallery was published showing how EbA has helped local communities build resilience to other shocks such as COVID-19. The photos and videos were also used to publish a multimedia storymap presented during Climate Adaptation Week."
  • An online seminar entitled "Nature-based solutions to climate change: from global ambition to local action" was conducted.
  • The project has developed a variety of studies, events, and knowledge products, which can be found in the related links.
