Supporting the institutionalisation and practical implementation of climate research capacities
The Indian Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) plans to establish a National Institute for Climate Change Studies and Action (NICCSA) to enhance collaboration between science, policy and business on climate change. In the run-up to the establishment, the project supported the MoEFCC in institutionalising and practically implementing climate research knowledge and competencies. Future were distributed among various academic institutions (as necessary) and coordinated by the project. The project has succeeded in attracting an internationally recognised partner, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), which worked with Indian academic institutions to conduct studies on current issues in climate science and practice in India.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- The ICCC project supports the MoEFCC in institutionalising capacities in climate science, climate policy and climate change, as well as in research studies and education and training activities for the implementation of India's climate targets. The project activities contribute to the future role of the National Institute for Climate Change Studies and Action (NICCSA), that should coordinate the cooperation between academia, politics and the private sector in respect to climate change. – Together with the MoEFCC, the project produced the book "The Climate Climb'- India's Strategy, Actions and Achievements". It was launched by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the COP26 International Climate Change Conference.
- On "Advancing Frontiers of Knowledge on Climate Action: Cross-sectional Approaches for Mitigation and Resilience", the project organised a three-day virtual training in October 2021, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC). The event was attended by 120 people from academia, government, private sector and civil society.
- In consultation with MoEFCC, the project had commissioned ten studies.
- IIT-Bombay: study on the water-energy-food nexus in India's Gangetic Plain;
- IIT-Gandhinagar: study on climate resilient infrastructure;
- IIM-Ahmedabad: study on the potential of peri-urban agriculture;
- Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC): study on sustainable consumption pathways for progressive development;
- Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC): study on shifting transport from road to rail. – Potential and advantages of green hydrogen as a fuel in India;
- Just transition (to climate neutrality) in India: possible approaches and ways forward;
- A concept paper on climate justice;
- Strengthening gender equality as a contribution to addressing climate change impacts;
- Analysis and assessment of countries' legal and regulatory approaches to strengthen climate action.
- In addition, the project continues the climate dialogue series. Target groups include officials from the MoEFCC and other ministries and government agencies, as well as representatives from education and research institutes and civil society organisations working on climate science and climate technologies.
- The project supported the MoEFCC in developing a policy paper on Article 6 of the Paris Climate Agreement.
- The project has conducted 14 regional trainings and developed e-learning modules on climate science, climate risk assessment and economics of climate change, as well as guides on climate change and the IPCC Assessment Report.
- In addition, the project has coordinated learning labs and events with the National Museum of Natural History to provide knowledge on sustainable lifestyles and climate change.
