Strategic Environmental Dialogue Forums with Newly Industrialising Countries

The purpose of the project was to widen the strategic environmental policy dialogues with major newly industrialising countries such as Brazil, China, India and South Africa. In the context of regional initiatives undertaken by German industry (e.g. APA, LAI, NMI, SAFRI) and in close cooperation with the selected newly industrialised countries, the project conducted bilateral environmental policy forums, and ensured its technical, strategic and organisational preparation. The dialogue forums were normally linked to a business exchange or, in some cases, to an environmental trade fair.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Organisation and implementation of large-scale dialogue forums in India and China that involve politics and industry to intensify international cooperation in the areas of environment and energy
  • Forum held in India in November 2008 with 250 participants on the topics of water/wastewater, waste management, energy efficiency in industry, renewable energy and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
  • Forum held in China in June 2009 with over 500 participants on the topics of water and air, waste and recycling, sustainable mobility and energy and financing of environmental protection measures
  • Organisation and implementation of bilateral ministerial meetings and ministerial visits to companies
  • Organisation of delegation trips to Germany
  • Preparation of studies on the environment policy frameworks
  • Inclusion of foreign chambers of commerce and companies; fact sheets on the participating companies and on their technologies and products
  • Inclusion of universities and NGOs in the thematic planning and implementation
  • Positive impact on the UNFCCC negotiations
