Scholarship Program Energy Transition for global climate protection
Driven by the need to take climate action as well as advances in technology, a growing number of nations are now starting to use renewables to decarbonise their energy systems. This work faces a number of technical, organisational and economic challenges, since wind and solar power require a fundamental rethink in terms of how future energy systems will be operated. A central role here is played by think tanks, whose domain experts are able to act independently of party-political and economic interests. The scholarship programme is using a train-the-trainer approach to turn these experts into change agents for the energy transition in their countries. Alongside economic and regulatory expertise, these agents must also have the capabilities to help shape and influence political processes. Course content is modular and oriented towards the needs of the participants. Experienced associates from Agora Energiewende and its partners act as trainers and mentors in this programme.

State of implementation/results
- This project (“EnerTracks“) is made up of the following three training paths, which can be combined or taken individually.
- Online Modules:
- The four online learning modules offer participants the opportunity to uncover important topics about the energy transformation at their own pace. These courses are designed for all levels and impart knowledge around the political, economic, and technical aspects related to the transformation of energy systems in English and Spanish.
- 2233 participants successfully completed at least one of the four online modules; a total of 399 participants successfully completed all four modules and received the "Energy Transformation Expert" certificate.
- Fellowship programme:
- The programme makes use of a multi-disciplinary approach on how to tackle climate change and the energy transformation globally through practical lessons, academic training, and one-on-one coaching.
- So far, a total of 62 participants from the following countries have been selected to come to Berlin: Argentina, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Kosovo, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
- The next fellowship will take place in November/December 2023 with 8 fellows from Brazil, Colombia, Lesotho, Mongolia, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Syria, Thailand.
- Study Tours:
- The study tours are designed to improve and strengthen participants' ability to engage in an informed dialogue with energy policy stakeholders in their home country. The in-person seminars allow participants to interact with stake-holders such as wind farm and solar owners, utilities and other energy experts and gain insights into the challenges and solutions of the energy transition in Germany. As a result of the COVID-19 travel restrictions the in person programme was converted into a completely virtual format. As long as the COVID-19 travel restrictions allow, the study tour programme will be offered both online and in person.
- Since 2018, a total of 133 participants from the following countries have taken part in the EnerTracks face-to-face seminars and virtual tours: Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Dominican Republic, DR Congo, Ecuador, Egypt, Georgia, Ghana, India, Indian, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, Vietnam, Zambia, Zimbabwe.
- Online Modules:
- Alumni Network:
- Upon successful completion of the program, all Study Tour and Fellowship are invited to join the EnerTracks Alumni Program. Since its inception in 03/2021, 134 participants have joined the network.
- Every quarter the EnerTracks team publishes an internal newsletter showcasing alumni profiles and recent reports as well as information about upcoming alumni events.
- In December 2021, the EnerTracks team published an alumni testimonial video highlighting alumni experiences participating in the EnerTracks Fellowship and Virtual Study Tour programmes.
- Since the establishment of the Alumni Network, a variety of activities have been developed and organized with alumni-support:
- The first global online Alumni Meeting took place in 2021 in a virtual format, providing participants with an interactive platform for professional exchange and individual networking across regional boundaries and training cohorts.
- The first global in-person Alumni Meeting occurred in 11/2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, during the COP27 Climate Summit, in the form of a 3-day workshop. During the meeting, alumni led their own interactive sessions on various subject matters and participated in a networking event organized by the International Network for Energy Transition Think Tanks (INETTT) at the Brazil Climate Action Hub. The EnerTracks team organized a panel discussion on "Enabling Just Transition: Policy, Technology, and Community Engagement" during the 4th Capacity-building Hub (Organized by Paris Committee on Capacity-building), in which five alumni served as moderators and speakers.
- The virtual "Global Clean Energy Summit: Empowering Nations Towards a Green Future," in collaboration with the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (Pakistan), took place in 07/2023. Ten alumni acted as speakers in two panel discussions on the topics of "Global Energy Transition: A Perspective on COP28" and "Mobilizing Green Finance for a Clean Energy Transition."
- Various online workshops on different subjects such as communication and media training, as well as webinars on professional topics and discussions, have been well-received since the inception of the network.
- In the second half of 2023, several events are planned, including a Young Professional Networking Roundtable in cooperation with the Berlin Energy Network, as well as a workshop in Colombia in collaboration with the think tank POLEN transiciones justas and the Heinrich Böll Foundation-Colombia on the topic of energy justice.
