Renewable Energies on Islands
The goal of the project was to support the transformation of energy systems on islands from fossil fuel-based infrastructure to renewable energy. The project built on and complemented the work of IRENA in the framework of the global Renewable Energy Islands Network (GREIN), moving from Renewable Readiness Assessments and national roadmaps for islands, to assisting more concretely in translating roadmap findings and recommendations into action on the ground. The results were geared towards strengthening the expertise and capacity of key actors at different levels in relation to the transformation towards renewable energy systems on islands.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed
- Barbados: Development of a roadmap for the further development of renewable energies. This was discussed with stakeholders and after it’s completion handed over to the government in Barbados.
- Cape Verde: Development of a study for a grid code to be used for a high share of renewable energies. This was handed over to the government of Cape Verde. Development of draft rules and regulations for independent power producers (so-called IPP framework). The study and the rules and regulations were presented in a regional final workshop with representatives of international and regional organizations (e.g. World Bank, EU) as well as representatives from other West African and Macaronesian islands (Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Canary Islands). Development of three example business models for private investment in the field of renewable energies. These were handed over to the local chambers of commerce.
- Kiribati: Development of an Integrated Energy Roadmap for Kiribati. This was discussed with stakeholders and then handed over to the government for review.
- Vanuatu: Presentation of the project results for Kiribati (roadmap, desalination study) and Vanuatu (electrification master plan for remote islands, pilot project for the use of RE in rural tourism) at the Annual Conference 2016 of the Pacific Energy Suppliers (PPA).
