REDD+ benefits: designing REDD+ benefit-sharing systems that reduce poverty

In line with the national REDD+ strategies in the participating countries, the project examined and tested how benefits resulting from performance-based REDD+ measures can be shared in a way that reduces poverty. This analysis primarily concentrated on the necessary economic, political and institutional frameworks for such REDD+ sharing mechanisms. In pilot regions in the three partner countries, the project partners tested the participatory development and application of such sharing mechanisms. In cooperation with 'The Forest Dialogue', the lessons learned in the pilot projects were disseminated in order to strengthen South–South cooperation.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Drivers of deforestation and forest degradation (infrastructure, large scale agriculture) and participative measures to reduce unsustainable agricultural practices such as agroforestry, biodiversity protection, ecotourism were identified.
  • Options for a pro-poor and equitable benefit-sharing arrangements and their integration into (sub-)national REDD+ strategies were developed. In Ghana the project focused on horizontal benefit sharing arrangements in the context of commercial plantations, modified Taungya Systems and community funds. In Mexico the project focused on governance issues and the challenge to include benefit sharing mechanisms into REDD+ policy frameworks. In Peru the project tested non-monetary benefit sharing mechanisms in the framework of a forestry cooperation agreement initiated by Conservation International and documented lessons-learned
  • The legal and institutional framework conditions of existing benefit sharing arrangements were analyzed and proposals for an integration of benefit sharing mechanisms were made
  • National policy processes with regard to forestry and REDD+ have been supported through successfull international dialogue events with a high number of participants and co-chair panels and which contributed to the project's high political visibility
  • Further results include the promotion of agroforestry systems, the restoration of forestry and environmental ecosystem services on 73 hectares in watersheds with endemic species and 35 hectares of agroforestry systems, the strenghening of protected areas and enforcement of land rights
