Promotion of solar energy in Chile
Solar power and heating is encountering growing interest in Chile thanks to the falling costs of the solar equipment. According to studies, the north of the country in particular has an immense potential for solar energy that has so far been virtually untapped. As part of the German Climate and Technology Initiative (DKTI), the project continued the commitment to support the market launch of grid-based renewable energies such as wind and solar power. Implemented by the KfW (German Development Bank), the project was the financial cooperation module of the joint project of the same name, which also included a technical cooperation module executed by GIZ. The financial cooperation components enabled needs-based and efficient access to loans for a first commercial solar thermal power plant (CSP). The project also organised training courses for banks that made use of the credit line.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- Operation of Chile's (and Latin America's) first Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plant started with a capacity of 110 MW el (CSP) plus 100 MWp PV on June 8th, 2021. More than 10,000 moving mirrors focus the sunlight on a receptor located on a tower thus heating liquid salts to over 600° C.
- The financial module of the joint project comprised a reduced interest grant of more than 65 m USD from German KfW contributing to the construction of the CSP. The IKI support allowed KfW to provide the grant to the project developer at a reduced interest rate.
