Mexican-German Climate Change Alliance – Phase IV
The project supports the Mexican government in the implementation of its climate and biodiversity goals. It uses an integrated approach, involving national, state and local levels, focusing on the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The project strengthens the national framework for climate and biodiversity action by supporting key decision makers in their strategies, implementation plans and monitoring. It also aims to facilitate the financing of bankable projects in the areas of decentralized energy generation and ecosystem-based adaptation. A special focus is put on maximizing the social and economic co-benefits which go along with climate and biodiversity action. The measures are complemented by a political dialogue and the exchange of knowledge and skills between Mexico and Germany and the management and systematization of knowledge through the IKI Interface function.

State of implementation/results
- Climate and biodiversity dialogue between the German and Mexican governments and the IKI Interface
- In May, IKI projects active in the Bajío region (Guanajuato, Querétaro, Michoacán, Jalisco, Nayarit, Colima, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas) came together to identify synergies. The aim of this exchange organized by the IKI Interface was to form a joint collaboration strategy to ensure greater efficiency, effectiveness and impact of climate and biodiversity actions in the region.
- As part of the project’s efforts to include youth as a cross-cutting component, it supports the German Embassy in Mexico for innovative projects by young people. Winners received a training program to strengthen their project implementation capacities.
- In addition, from July to September, the project has supported the National Institute of Social Economy (INAES) to train 70 young Mexicans in green finance; a youth network on sustainable and solidarity finances was created.
- In August, the project, together with UNDP, supported a conference by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) to strengthen synergies between multilateral environmental agreements for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF).
- Support for climate change and biodiversity policy
- The project has worked with the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (Conabio) and UN Development Programme (UNDP) in updating the National Biodiversity Strategy and its alignment with the KM-GBF. The updated documents will be presented at the COP 16 to the Convention on Biological Diversity in October in Colombia.
- The state of Guanajuato has been supported in updating the State’s Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity Strategy.
- The project contributes to the intersectoral coordination of work groups for the reconstruction of the port of Acapulco due to the impacts of Hurricane Otis. A guide has been developed with adaptation guidelines and criteria for the reconstruction of the tourism sector.
- In the framework of a Climate Dialogue with the German Embassy, the Gender, Human Rights and Climate Change National Action Plan was discussed with over 100 persons from the federal government, civil society, cooperation agencies and youth representatives.
- Financing of renewable energy
- The project began the management and design process of the solar photovoltaic system with storage to promote the generation of ice with solar energy with the Fishermen's cooperatives of Rio Lagartos in Yucatan, achieving co-financing of $50,000 USD through UNDP’s Small Donations Program (PPD).
- Financing of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA)
- The FinTank mentoring program has been training 28 community projects and local CSOs in the tourism, agriculture, forest management, fishing and environmental sectors to strengthen their bankability and adaptive capacity to climate change.
