Mainstreaming of ecosystem based adaptation into the national climate change adaptation strategy and into land use and development of Viet Nam

Climate change is threatening Viet Nam’s biodiversity, ecosystems and its services and thus the livelihood of many people who depend on them. Viet Nam’s adaption policy does not yet take into account ecosystem based adaption (EbA) according to its potential. Rural people and staff / decision makers within institutions that deal with adaptation are the target groups of the project. Ecosystem based adaptation will be integrated into the national adaptation strategy and both land use and developing planning through advisory services to relevant institutions, capacity development and pilot EbA activities (including monitoring and impact assessment) as well as the development of innovative and effective adaptation methods.The integration of EbA approaches contributes to the sustainable protection of biodiversity, ecosystems and its services and to the enhancement of the resilience of rural people confronting the impacts of climate change.

State of implementation/results

Since January 2014, the Steering Committee Advisory and Coordination Committee (ACC) meets every six months. It is composed of all implementing partners and the national correspondents from the six target countries.
In St. Lucia, a training workshop was held on effective awareness-raising activities with participants from all six target countries. Six months of environmental awareness campaigns for marine and coastal areas were then carried out in all target countries.
In Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a meeting was organized for selected fishermen from all six destination countries to exchange experiences and strengthen their leadership skills.
In each of the six target countries, contracts were signed with the local NGOs involved for the first round of small project grants.
The two-mile zone around the coastline of St. Kitts and Nevis was officially named "St. Kitts and Nevis Marine Management Area ".
Environmental data from previous reef evaluations using different survey methods were collected and analyzed. For representatives of all target countries, a training workshop on marine and socioeconomic survey methods was conducted.
The CaribNode regional information system has been set up in partnership with IUCN and offers its users various tools for collecting and processing marine environmental data. First trainings on the use of CaribNode were carried out for national data managers in the context of a conference for Geographical Information Systems.
For the first time, report cards describing the condition of the reefs were produced in the project region Coral Reef and presented at the World Oceans Day 2016.
Maps of marine habitats and seabed conditions close to the coast have been prepared for all partner countries.
