Innovative development planning integrating adaptation to climate change in Mali

This project built competencies for climate change adaptation among national and local decision-makers. This enabled them to identify appropriate, effective measures, integrate them into decentralised development planning, and carry them out. To achieve this, the project offered basic and further training in the field of climate change and adaptation, and established a platform for sharing experience. The project partners helped the regional authorities to implement concrete adaptation measures and presented the outcomes and experiences of the project at national, international and regional forums and conferences. In addition, they lobbied to raise awareness on the need for adaptation measures, identifyied financing mechanisms at a decentralised level and developed innovative methods and tools for integrating adaptation measures into decentralised development strategies.

State of implementation/results

  • Potential adaptation measures for selected communities and counties have been identified
  • 1077 representatives of local authorities as well as relevant government service providers have been sensitized with regard to climate change
  • 7 trainings modules on climate change for public servants at national, regional and local level have been developed
  • Communities and counties where innovative and gender-sensitive methods and instruments for integrating of adaptation into ocal development planning will be tested have been identified
  • The project supported the integration of climate change considerations into the development plans of 3 communities and 7 counties of the three 3 project regions
  • The project's approach the "climate proofing" method has been presented at various national and international events
  • As part of the first harvest, 350 women from the communities of Sébécoro 1, Kolokani, Didiéni and Sagabla improved their food security by growing vegetables which were also used to trade it against wheat. The financial gain of selling extra produce has been approx. 12 000 Euro
  • The implementation of adaptation measures led to sustainable land use on 295 hectares of which 3 hectares have been reforested
  • The guidelines for tintegration of adaptation into local and regional development plans has been launched in 2018.
  • in 2018 training modules for regional, national and local level climate change planning, policy processes, science and negotiation have been completetd and are ready to be applied in the whole frncophone Africa
