ICT-based adaptation to climate change in cities

In order to enable cities to adapt to climate change and climate-related weather extremes, urban planners and regional decision-makers need a local database for climate-resilient urban development. The project supported cities to use participative approaches, based on information and communication technologies, in order to strengthen their climate resilience. Innovative approaches to data collection and evaluation enabled city administrations and decision-makers to obtain the necessary information for developing and implementing local adaptation strategies. Findings from three pilot cities in India, Mexico and Peru with differing risk scenarios were introduced to the international discourse in cooperation with German and international partners.

State of implementation/results

Project is completed.
The digital solutions for adaptation to climate change in cities in Mexico ("Arbol IoT - Internet of Trees" from the city of Guadalajara) and Peru ("AylluDamos - We Help" from the city of Trujillo) were developed and piloted in 2018 in co-creation with citizens and decision-makers and in cooperation with start-ups, universities and small and medium-sized enterprises. These solutions were transferred to other cities in 2019.
In 2019, the digital solution in India ("Mu.CitySavior - I am City Savior" from the city of Bhubaneshwar) was also developed in co-creation with citizens and decision-makers, which involves residents in the prevention of flooding.
The international meeting "Smart Cities: Civic Tech for a Climate Resilient Future for All" was held at the "Impact Hub" in Berlin on 27.11.2018. Digital solutions at the interface between climate and urbanisation from Vienna, Madrid, Cologne, Guadalajara and Trujillo were presented and broadcast live for partners and other experts in Germany and abroad (see video recordings online: www.youtube.com/…).
On 19.02.2020, partners from the partner countries together with the project team successfully presented the citizen-centred innovation process and the three digital solutions at the BMU in Berlin.
