Green Cooling Initiative

The project helped to design more efficient processes and structures in cooling and climate control and accelerates the transfer of emission-reducing technologies in developing countries. To this end, partners were setting up a ‘green cooling’ network to spur cooperation between technology providers and users in industrialised countries, developing countries and emerging economies. This also created incentives for investment in climate-friendly technologies. The experience gained entered the new technology transfer mechanism under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Side Events at the 28th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in Kigali, Rwanda:
- R290 air conditioners (joint with UNIDO, FECO, Midea)
- Integrating the HFC Amendment in ongoing national mitigation actions (joint with GIZ Proklima)
- First Conversion Projects from HFCs to Hydrocarbons in the Refrigeration Manufacturing Sector, Walton, Bangladesh and Palfridge, Swaziland (joint with UNIDO and UNDP).
- National stakeholder workshops in Mauritius, Namibia, Ghana and Kenya to discuss and verify the results of the respective RAC inventories.
- During the "Green Cooling Week" in Berlin, international political and industrial representatives among others participate in an innovation workshop and visit of the atmosphere conference in September 2017.
- For Kenya, a solar model cold room was designed within the framework of the technology partnership with best practice technologies for refrigeration systems, insulation and the predominant decentralised power supply. This was put into operation by a team consisting of GIZ, HEAT and the local partner Lake View Fisheries as well as Kenyan refrigeration engineers. The installation of the plant was filmed by Deutsche Welle.
- Within the framework of the technology partnership with Ghana, the official handover of 380 room air conditioners with the natural refrigerant propane will take place in October 2018. The demonstration will be implemented in cooperation with two local private partners who are responsible for the storage, identification and operation of the equipment. The manufacturer, together with GIZ in Ghana, will conduct a one-week training course in mid-October to ensure the safe handling of propane air-conditioners.
