Generating Energy from Waste Water and Organic Waste (Waste to Energy)
The project reduced greenhouse gas emissions in the Indian city of Nashik by using sewage and organic waste to produce energy. One of the intentions of the project was to demonstrate a technical solution that is reproducible and financially feasible in densely populated urban areas and meets the Indian government’s climate change targets. The demonstration project brought together a range of actors in Nashik who designed, built and operated a plant in which sewage and organic waste undergo anaerobic fermentation, enabling materials to be recovered and energy generated.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- Feasibility study to examine possible sites for the construction of the anaerobic digestion plant were prepared and the city of Nashik in the Indian state of Maharashtra was identified as the site.
- The "Public-Private Partnership" concept was developed for the plant construction, with the city of Nashik taking responsibility as the developer.
- A shell of the anaerobic digestion plant, including operational and social buildings, reception tanks for fermentation substrates and foundations for digesters, was completed.
- The entire plant was completed and inaugurated in November 2017.
- Decision-makers from various federal states and cities expressed interest in the project concept, indicating a high potential for scaling-up this technology in the future.
- The project supported the study on biogas potential in India awarded by the German Biogas Association to the "Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH" (DBFZ).
- An event on "Biogas in India" was held at the IFAT trade fair (World's Leading Trade Fair for Water, Sewage, Waste, Raw Materials Management and Environmental Technologies) in Mumbai in September 2017.
