Fostering Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Management of Secondary Raw Materials

The project had the objective to anchor resource efficient production and the maximum use of secondary raw material within the concept of a circular economy. It sought to firmly establish the topic of resource security amongst private companies and public institutions, to design an enabling environment for resource-efficient production and to form incentives for creating a market for secondary materials. The applicability of the concept was demonstrated in selected industrial sectors. The impacts of the project were accounted for in reduced environmental impacts along the entire life cycle of a product, in lowering CO2-emissions by substituting virgin by secondary raw materials, and by inducing cost reduction in production processes.

  • Indian Resource Panel (InRP) with ten representatives established on 1 October 2015
  • Baseline study carried out focusing on material flows in the construction and the automotive sector
  • International workshops organized on “Securing Sustainable Resource Utilization and Reuse of Secondary Raw Materials by Fostering Resource Efficiency” on 17 November 2015 and on “EPR - Extended Producer Responsibility” on 12-13 May 2016
  • Workshops provided on management and utilisation of construction waste and secondary raw materials in the three Indian cities of Ahmedabad, Chennai and Kolkata
  • Pilot projects initiated with companies in Ahmedabad and New Delhi on optimisation of construction waste management, advisory on certification for recycled products leading to a better market acceptance. In addition, municipalities trained on how recycled products can be considered in public tender processes
  • Practice-oriented training carried out on resource efficiency in the automotive industry in cooperation with the VDI-ZRE and the technology division of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), the ACMA Center of Technology (ACT) and the Indian project partner TERI
  • Study trips to Bavaria (Germany) for company delegations from Karnataka and Delhi to exchange experiences with German companies on the implementation of resource efficiency in the production chain, environmental friendly processing of end-of-life vehicles/construction waste and the use of secondary raw materials in the construction industry.
