Ecosystem-based Adaptation strategies to climate change in Colombia and Ecuador
The project contributed to the reduction of climate change vulnerability of local communities in the project regions of Colombia and Ecuador. It integrated the ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) approach in relevant politics, plans and strategies of governmental bodies and implemented its measures. Local-level strategies were planned and implemented. The understanding of climate risks and reactivities were strengthened for national and local authorities through capacity development in both project countries. The adoption of the EbA approach by governmental bodies, the private sector, local communities and other stakeholders was supported via political instruments.

State of implementation/results
- Project completed.
- The project evaluated existing vulnerability analyses and climate data and covered information gaps through selective studies.
- In both countries, the project identified, evaluated and prioritised EbA measures.
- The EbA measures in Colombia concentrated on the restoration of two river courses in Cartagena and the afforestation of parts of a mangrove forest. For upscaling, two EbA measures in the province of CĆ³rdoba aimed at the restoration of the SinĆŗ River water channels and the construction of greenhouses for smallholder families.
- The EbA measures in Ecuador focused on agrobiodiversity, ecotourism, sustainable water management, sustainable livestock farming (especially goats) and the designation of a communal municipal protected area. The Portoviejo water catchment area served for upscaling.
- The project strengthened the understanding of climate risks and response capacities of national and local authorities through capacity development in both project countries and coordinated the capacity development programmes together with the respective partners:
- In Colombia, more than 1000 participants participated in 17 training workshops. In Cartagena more than 30 private enterprises took part in three training courses.
- In Ecuador, 87 people from 30 different institutions took part in capacity development training courses. Among other things, it is intended to include them in the training programme for schools in the province of ManabĆ.
- In both countries the project developed and implemented communication strategies with the partners. They included events for regional exchange of experience, videos, web articles, publications and news in social media. In Colombia, the project pcompiled a publication on EbA together with the Ministry of the Environment (MADS), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), WWF and Conservation International (CI): www.minambiente.gov.co/ā¦
- The project produced 4 short videos on mangrove conservation, the CaƱo Grande/Sicara canal and strengthening implementation capacity for public relations. In 2017, the National Planning Ministry published a virtual version of Colombia's National Adaptation Plan, which contains the EbA approach, on their website: www.dnp.gov.co/ā¦
- In Ecuador, the project prepared and published 8 documents for further training in the EbA approach for specific target groups (university, representatives of small farmers, technical advisory service and NGOs) : www.ambiente.gob.ec/ā¦
- The project was in continuous exchange with other IKI and GIZ projects in the region, including visits to events in Mexico, Peru and Panama.
