Ecosystem-based adaptation measures for integrated coastal and marine zone management (EbAMAR)

Peru’s coastline is especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The important economic sectors, tourism and fishery, are dependent on a variety of ecosystem services. The project integrated ecosystem based adaptation (EbA) measures into coastal zone management at all levels in the strategic planning and investment processes. It gathered climate relevant information with the help of a monitoring system. Building on this, it developed EbA measures for selected ecosystems in a systematic manner. The project supported the implementation of EbA in investment projects, thereby, improving political and legal framework for integrated coastal zone management. Strengthening institutional capabilities and involving local actors into decision and management processes contributed to the sustainability. In addition, the project supported the Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Economy and Finance to integrate the EbA approach into cross-sectoral budget plans.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • INTERNATIONAL:
    • More than 70 people from Latin America and the Caribbean exchanged views on blue carbon at the fourth and final online forum “Blue Economy Waves”. The forum was led by the Coastal Marine Conservation Working Group of GIZ's internal sector network GADeR-ALC and included seven marine coastal projects from Peru, Ecuador, Co-lombia, Brazil, Costa Rica and Mexico. • NATIONAL:
    • Through the partnership between GIZ, SERNANP and the Nature Conservancy, more than 30 fishermen from new bays and representatives from seven marine protected areas and fisheries authorities were able to share their challenges and sustainable practices. More than 100 people, including fishermen from Pisco, Huacho and El Nuro, used a free app with interactive modules on fishing and responsible consumption. The aim is to promote marine conservation, secure fish resources and create social prosperity. All users were satisfied with the app. excuela.com
  • PISCO:
    • The Pisco wetland was selected as a pilot project to assess cost wetlands in order to determine their current status and support their establishment as an environmental conservation area (ACA). As part of the Procompite funding program, 168,197 euros have been earmarked for initiatives for the sustainable use of nature. The aim is to strengthen the competitiveness of production chains and help the population of Pisco to adapt to climate change.
  • PIURA:
    • At the VIII. National Seminar on Marine Coasts in Sechura (Iura) with over 150 representatives from the 10 coastal regions, progress in ecotourism in coastal wetlands was presented. In a partnership between ZMT Bremen and the Peruvian Marine Institute, more than 40 people participated in a workshop where studies on the vulnerability of Piura's coastal wetlands to climate change were presented. The results will serve as a basis for ecosystem-based adaptation measures (EBA).
