Disaster Prevention and Adaptation to Climate Change in Remote Himalayan Villages

The project developed strategies to help around 100 Himalayan villages adapt to the consequences of climate change and improve disaster prevention measures. A particular focus was on preparing the people in the affected regions to cope with reduced water supplies. Working together with the villagers, the project aimed at finding ways of managing future water shortages and anchoring these solutions at local level. Local climate change centres were set up in order to raise awareness among the population.

  • Project completed
  • Information and awareness-raising campaign on climate change and its local consequences implemented, for example preparation and distribution of information material on climate change and its consequences, documentary film produced on the impacts in the pilot regions, training courses held in relevant subjects
  • Together with the villages, participatory research activities carried out into possible adaptation measures; the results have been fed into the policy dialogue with the responsible government bodies
