Development of integrated monitoring systems for REDD+ in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC)

The project has developed an integrated monitoring system for forest areas, carbon storage and emissions from deforestation and the degradation of forests. The system involved a large part of the countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The aim of the project was to achieve a high degree of accuracy in emissions calculation through a combination of innovative remote sensing data and the results of terrestrial surveys. To achieve this goal, the project improved the technical and institutional capacities in selected SADC countries.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • The regional project in the SADC region helped the partner countries to prepare the region technically and institutionally to participate in the REDD + mechanism through integrated monitoring systems.
  • Thanks to the project, the SADC region has an IPCC-compliant method for measuring changes in forest areas and the associated carbon content. The adoption of the regional standard by all SADC member states is still pending, but all the decision documents were available to the end of the project; The adoption is expected in the near future.
  • With the selection of the pilot areas, the Baikea Teak Forests, Miombo Forests and Mopane Forests, the emissions were recorded in three important forest ecosystems for the region. Through extensive training measures, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and Namibia were trained to apply the system applied in the test region also in other.
