Decarbonising Humanitarian Energy (DHE) MPTF

Electricity is a necessity for the humanitarian response, yet the majority of electricity in humanitarian contexts is supplied by diesel generators. In collaboration with humanitarian actors working in the Sahel Region, the project’s overall goal is to implement energy efficiency measures and sustainable energy systems at scale through the facilitation of a Centralised Clean Energy Service. In doing so, the project aims to reduce the amount of diesel humanitarian responders are consuming to produce electricity, resulting in reduced CO2 emissions and costs. The expected outcomes also include strengthened coordination, enhanced evidence, provision of technical assistance, leveraging of additional finance, capacity building and knowledge sharing. The project also seeks to increase access to electricity for displaced people and their hosts. With additional funding, the service will be extended beyond the first countries and can also support other UN activities, such as peacekeeping.
