Cooperative climate change adaptation in Sierra Madre and the Coast of Chiapas

This project supported Mexico in developing and implementing a strategy for effective EbA measures in watersheds in coastal regions. The strategy focused on the protection of resources while ensuring sustainable economic development in the region. This strategy reduced the impact of climate change on ecosystems and preserved the livelihoods of the population. Project partners initially assessed a project region’s vulnerability to climate change and subdivided it into risk areas for extreme weather events. Appropriate adaptation measures were then planned for these regions. The aim was to finance these measures sustainably through the global carbon market as well as through a regional public investment strategy. In addition, the project used participative approaches in order to sensitise the public, establish cooperation with local structures and ensure decision-makers deliver on their responsibilities.
