Climate-Water-Nexus: Integrated Water Resources Management in the Niger Basin (CLIM'O)

Increasing climate variability threatens agricultural production and water security in West and Central Africa. Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) in the Niger Basin can provide effective solutions to the adverse impacts of climate change in one of the most impoverished and vulnerable river systems in the world. The project will strengthen the Niger Basin Authority and its member countries to mainstream climate change adaptation into regional and national planning, implementation, and monitoring mechanisms. A transboundary approach encompassing IWRM, water, energy and food NEXUS approaches, wetland restoration and management as well as climate-smart agriculture (CSA) offers solutions which national climate strategies (e.g., NAPs, NDCs) alone may not be able to deliver. The project plans to focus specifically on three transboundary tributaries to the Niger river: the Sankarani, Mekrou and Benue sub-basins.
