Climate change and protected area management

The objective of the project was to help CONANP to implement and develop its climate strategy in targeted protected areas of the forested, biodiversity-rich ecological corridor of the Sierra Madre Oriental. The project was exploring the potential for carbon sequestration and identifying funding opportunities, such as REDD mechanisms (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) and payment for environmental services. It was expanding the protected areas, and reforesting and/or renaturalising degraded areas. Strategies and pilot measures for sustainable agriculture and forestry, along with ecotourism, were supported. With the input of the local inhabitants, who were being specifically trained to analyse and monitor ecosystems and the local climate, the project was assisting selected protected areas with the revision of their management plans. Equipment for the administration of the new protected areas was also provided.
