Advancing Understanding of Natural Forest Carbon Stock Enhancement as part of REDD+

The project enhanced capacities of its partners in the Lao People's Democratic Republic and Vietnam to pilot the expansion of carbon enrichment measures in forests, to collect and disseminate relevant information and to integrate the topic into national REDD+ planning. The objective was to pilot carbon enrichment on an area of 5,000 hectares comprising various forest ecosystems and thereby training local employees. Monitoring systems in pilot areas were tested to gain experience in integrating natural carbon storage into national REDD+ systems. Further, the project partners analyzed whether measures to restore damaged forests are economically feasible, considering transaction and administrative costs and benefits for the local population in the long term. Workshops and training measures served to promote knowledge exchange and capacity development.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • In the second phase (2015-2018), the project aimed to develop and implement measures to rehabilitate forest ecosystems at landscape level in an ecologically and socially compatible rehabilitation of forest ecosystems at the landscape level. This has been achieved by supporting the authorities in designing and introducing provincial landscape plans as part of the National REDD+ Programme, by linking activities to simplified performance-based incentives, and by addressing the drivers of forest degradation
  • The project pioneered the use of Forest Landscape Restoration through developing and implementing pilot activities in Ha Tinh and Nghe An Provinces, which are intended to generate results-based payments from the FCPF Carbon Fund programme (2019-2025).
