Accelerating Adaptation in Asia

In Asia, economic growth, rapid urbanisation and infrastructure development are contributing to increasing land degradation. At the same time, the consequences of climate change are becoming increasingly devastating. The project has therefore initiated a paradigm shift in hydraulic engineering. To this end, it developed the platform "Building with Nature in Asia" to mobilise public and private stakeholders and enable the scaling up of this approach to climate change adaptation. In this way, climate-resilient landscapes were created that support the long-term resilience of cities and settlements along vulnerable Asian coasts and rivers.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed.
  • In March 2022, the final publication of Building with Nature Indonesia was published. It summarizes the interventions and lessons learned from the landscape-wide implementation of the Building with Nature approach between 2015 and 2021 in Demak. It also shows how BwN Indonesia has supported upscaling in Indonesia and serves as a springboard for upscaling across Asia (www.ecoshape.org/…).
  • A report identifying policy entry points for institutionalizing Building with Nature in Indonesia has been published (www.ecoshape.org/…).
  • In February 2022, a video developed by GreenTV about Building with Nature Asia was posted on the WI website and YouTube channel. (see the media library)
  • In July 2021, technical guidelines for restoring eroding tropical coastlines developed by the BwN Indonesia platform were published. These guidelines are used as a resource for the BwN Asia platform and were also disseminated by the Global Mangrove Alliance and the Adaptation Knowledge Portal (www.wetlands.org/…).
  • In January 2021, EcoShape released its book "BwN - Creating, implementing and upscaling Nature-based Solutions" at the Climate Adaptation Summit (www.ecoshape.org/…).
