25,000 Solar Roofs for Mexico

A key climate policy challenge in Mexico is reducing emissions in the energy sector. Due to the high levels of sunshine, the country has excellent conditions for the use of solar energy. The project promoted the use of solar collectors and thus contributed to reducing the emission of greenhouse gases from Mexican households. To this end, an investment subsidy for purchasing 19,000 solar collectors was secured, which was handled through a mortgage from the real estate financier INFONAVIT. Through training, the project increased expertise on services for installing and maintaining the plants. Information events on the solar collectors raised awareness among institutions and potential customers on these technologies and provided explanations on the financing options. In this way, even the low income population gained access to an innovative technology to which they would have otherwise hardly had access due to the high initial investments required.

State of implementation/results

  • Project completed
  • Innovative, country-wide model for subsidising solar thermal energy for low-income families developed together with the partner
  • Financing agreement with the project partner INFONAVIT successfully concluded
  • Minimum standards for installation quality approved (e.g. certification systems, training of installers)
  • 50 training courses implemented for installation companies and developers in 11 federal states. A total of 5,000 people were trained to be inspectors or installation technicians
  • Subsidies for 19,013 solar collectors granted, enabling an estimated 97,800 t CO2e of CO2 savings over their lifespans
  • Comprehensive information materials disseminated and information events held in a total of 15 Mexican federal states
  • two pilot projects for ensuring installation quality completed.
  • Publication on experiences and best practice examples from the project prepared (Extern Spanish: www.international-climate-initiative.com/…)
