Zacharovanyi Krai National Park
The largest as yet unprotected tracts of old-growth beech forests in the Ukrainian Carpathians are found around Zacharovanyi Krai National Park. This single proposed expansion area holds more than 4,000 ha of primary forests, almost as much as all such forests in Germany combined. Many protected areas exist in the Ukrainian section of the Carpathian Mountains, yet these areas often remain highly fragmented. As such work is in progress to expand protected areas to improve connectivity and include as yet unprotected, high-conservation-value sites.
