Turning Sunshine into Opportunity | Solar Ice Maker
The 'Solar Ice Maker' (SIM) is the result of a multi-year technology collaboration (2017-2020) with the private sectors that includes technology development, demonstration, and establishment of local manufacturing in Indonesia. SIM is developed through German-Indonesian cooperation with fundings from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the German Federal Ministry for the Economic and Development Cooperation (BMZ) under various projects, including LCORE-INDO (IKI), EnDev (BMZ), Green Chiller (IKI), and ExploRE (IKI), and in collaboration with private sectors, and the Dresden Institute for Air Handling and Refrigeration (ILK). SIM is an environmentally friendly energy solution to stimulate economic growth in Indonesia's remote and disadvantaged regions by integrating a solar PV technology to powering an ice making machine; providing an ice block supply for the fisherman community with the capacity to produce one ton of ice per day as designed. Following the successful testing of the first prototype at a factory (AIREF) in 2018, GIZ and partners deployed this technology in Sulamu village, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, started in 2020 and fully operated in late May 2022.
