Protection of orangutans in Malaysia: The beginning of a journey
Traditionally harvested for its resinous wood, agarwood or locally known as gaharu, is now planted to help conserve orangutans habitat in the Ulu Menyang, Batang Ai landscape. Forest Department Sarawak, together with WWF-Malaysia and Aquilaria Plantations came up with this pilot project after the department discovered thousands of orangutan nests in the area. Not only that, the gaharu can also benefit local community in the area, especially those from Rumah Manggat, by harvesting gaharu leaves and turning them into medicinal tea.
