Vietnam’s 3.000 km shoreline is highly exposed to extreme typhoons with devastating impacts on the local population. Together with local communities in high-risk areas, UNIQUE and IREN of Hue University use nature-based solutions (NbS) to restore the protective functions of highly degraded coastal forests in the North-Central Coast. The team has developed an ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) concept using site-adapted native tree species for estuaries and dunes to demonstrate the feasibility and upscale this innovative NbS, thereby increasing the resilience of local communities while improving their livelihoods through sustainable business models. As part of the upscaling strategy, the project actively promotes the approach and involves schools and universities in the implementation – in line with the beginning UN Decade on Ecological Restoration.
