Fresh air for the ancient Inca capital

Around 80 percent of sewage worldwide is channelled into the environment without being treated. Unprocessed wastewater creates three times more greenhouse emissions than that which is treated. Within the WaCCliM project, which is financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Environment Ministry (BMUB), the sewage sludge treatment in Cusco was optimised and the facility now creates biogas. Thanks to the modernisation measures the municipal sanitation company SEDACUSCO, saves 5,300 tons of CO2 annually.

The project’s location could not be more historic: Cusco is one of the oldest settlements in Latin America and the nearby world-famous Inca citadel Machu Picchu attracts millions of tourists annually. In addition to that the tradition of wastewater management in Cusco reaches back to the Incas, who already developed sewage systems.
