Du’ut-Tasi: Reviving the Ocean's Meadow – Seagrass Conservation in Timor-Leste

The Seagrass Ecosystem Service Project focuses on conserving and restoring seagrass meadows across key regions, including Timor-Leste, to enhance marine biodiversity, support local livelihoods, and combat climate change. Led by CMS Abu Dhabi in collaboration with partners like Blue Ventures, the project highlights the critical ecosystem services provided by seagrass.
In Timor-Leste, the Hera community leads efforts to protect the nation’s invaluable seagrass meadows, locally called Du’ut-Tasi. These underwater ecosystems offer essential seagrass ecosystem services—from supporting marine biodiversity and sustaining fisheries to protecting coastlines and capturing carbon. Through the traditional environmental law of Tara Bandu, the Hera community, conservationists, and policymakers work together to restore these vital habitats, ensuring they thrive for both the environment and the communities that depend on them.
