Biological Diversity - shouldering responsibility together
Biological diversity - the Earth's wealth of ecosystems, species and genes - provides humankind with a number of services that are essential for both human well-being and sustainable development. The present loss of biodiversity is jeopardising these services and endangers numerous livelihoods as well as entire economies. In order to halt the global loss of biodiversity, the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the Strategic Plan 2011 - 2020 and agreed that biodiversity loss could only be effectively addressed through simultaneous and coordinated action at a number of levels, each ofwhich is essential to achieve a lasting impact and forging a sustainable path to keep human societies within the limits of the planet's biological resources.
The German Government has committed to provide suitable financing for projects designed to conserve biological diversity. In 2008 German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to provide half a billion euros each year from 2013 onwards for the conservation of forests and other ecosystems. The German Government has fulfilled this commitment up to now. The funds made available for international biodiversity conservation have more than doubled since 2008 and compared to the average funding for the years 2006 - 2010.
