Cover National Interpretation for the Identification of High Conservation Values in Bhutan

Guarding its rich biodiversity, Bhutan has committed to protecting its natural environment. More than 50% of the country are protected areas and according to the constitution, at least 60% of the country's land must remain forested. Considering its biological richness and cultural heritage, the project applies the High Conservation Value (HCV) approach. This enables decision-makers to make informed decisions about the conservation of cultural and natural heritage sites outside protected areas. The HCV approach provides for 6 categories of conservation values (ecological, social and cultural values) and needs to be interpreted at the national level. This National Interpretation has been developed in an inclusive multi-stakeholder process. It recognises Bhutan's cultural and natural heritage and serves as a guide for the identification of HCVs.
