Blue Nature-based Solutions in Nationally Determined Contributions
Can oceans and marine environments help combat the climate emergency? Yes. Oceans, marine and coastal environments hold the key to indispensable Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees, let alone 2 degrees Celsius and for helping humanity adapt to the consequences of climate change. How do NbS that focus marine and coastal habitats work in practice and how do they fit into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement? Where can I find examples of concrete actions that countries can take to help enhance the climate mitigation and climate adaptation role of the ocean, coastal and marine environments?
This new booklet provides a deep dive into how existing examples on coastal and marine NbS can inform and inspire the design and the implementation of NDCs – including for NDC transparency and review cycles – in the national, sub-national and even project-level context.
