Sustainable N2O emissions reduction in Colombia

Monómeros, a nitric acid producer in Colombia, sealed a grant agreement with the IKI-funded Nitric Acid Climate Action Group.

In a momentous stride towards environmental sustainability, Monómeros, a prominent nitric acid producer in Colombia, sealed a significant grant agreement with the IKI-funded Nitric Acid Climate Action Group (NACAG). This collaboration marks a pivotal endeavor to unite global efforts in the reduction of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions.

An equivalent of 100,000 travelers flying from Berlin to Bogota avoided

The official signing ceremony took place in Barranquilla, Colombia, in October 2023. The funding agreement commits funds from the International Climate Initiative (IKI). These funds will be instrumental in supporting the deployment of advanced nitrous oxide abatement and monitoring technologies within Monómeros' nitric acid plant.

Monómeros, a cornerstone in the Colombian chemical industry, boasts a substantial mitigation potential, exceeding 150,000 tons of CO2-equivalents annually. This annual reduction is equivalent to the emissions of 100,000 travelers flying from Berlin to Bogota.

Charting a path

The signing of the grant agreement became possible after the Columbian government has committed to permanent climate-friendly nitric acid production in February 2022. This partnership exemplifies the potential of collaboration with the private sector in tackling global environmental challenges. Together, Monómeros and NACAG are charting a path toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.
