Solutions for a Healthy Planet

The new online platform “Panorama” showcases conservation and sustainable development success stories worldwide on land and at sea
A new online platform, showcasing conservation and sustainable development success stories worldwide was recently launched with the support of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The “Panorama” platform allows conservation and development practitioners to share their stories, get recognised for successful work, learn and get inspired by how others have tackled challenges across the globe. Powerful search and classification functionalities allow for quickly finding relevant solutions across themes, geographies and ecosystems.
“Panorama is a fantastic new platform for sharing environmental solutions. It is vital that we share success stories as widely as possible, in order to achieve a better outcome for people and nature” said Erik Solheim, Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme at the platform launch at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Hawaii in September 2016.

The Blue Solutions project, financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), has pioneered the development of the “solutioning approach”, delivering a case study format and developing the learning and knowledge management mechanisms around it. The project also contributed significantly to the funding for development of the platform, making the BMUB an acknowledged “development partner” of “Panorama”.
And “Panorama” and its solutioning approach is more than just an online platform. In-person workshops, exchange forums, webinars and other peer-learning formats complement the range of available products.
Currently, the Panorama platform provides two thematic portals: one on Protected Area Solutions, hosted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Global Protected Areas Programme, and one on Marine and Coastal Solutions, hosted by Blue Solutions. The two portals contain almost 250 solutions applied by NGOs, government institutions, academia, international organizations, foundations and the private sector.

Backed by a strong partnership that is based on the contributions of thus far over 230 “solution providers”, Panorama is set up for sustainability. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and IUCN act as “managing partners” with a longer-term institutional commitment.
The IKI project “Mainstreaming EbA - Strengthening EbA in decision making processes” currently assembles a portfolio of “Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) solutions” in the Panorama format and will host the next upcoming thematic portal on “EbA to climate change” as part of the Panorama platform. The portal will be officially launched in December 2016 during the COP 13 - Thirteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Cancun, Mexico.
Panorama connects a growing number of institutions and individuals and is envisioned to be continuously expanded with new partners and solutions from further topics related to biodiversity for sustainable development in the future.
