Justice as a guiding principle for effective climate action and biodiversity conservation

The Gender Action Plan specifies the principles and objectives of the IKI Gender Strategy and ensures their implementation.

The Gender Action Plan (GAP) serves to implement the Gender Strategy of the International Climate Initiative (IKI). Short- and medium-term targets and measures have been formulated in the GAP for the period from January 2024 to January 2026. The strategy and action plan apply to the entire funding programme, including all projects and funding areas.

Effective climate action and biodiversity conservation arise from successful cooperation between and with people. People contribute their own identities, social and educational backgrounds, gender-specific needs and perspectives. The IKI takes this diversity into consideration in its work. This is also reflected in the IKI strategy, which includes gender justice as one of the success factors for project implementation.

Objectives of the IKI Gender Action Plan

The IKI Gender Strategy defines the overarching objectives for the promotion of gender justice since November 2021. The GAP serves to achieve the targets of the strategy and pursues three main objectives:

  1. More effective climate change mitigation, greater resilience to the impacts of climate change and improved biodiversity conservation through promoting gender justice.
  2. Social transformation towards gender justice by implementing gender-transformative approaches and at least gender-responsive project planning and implementation.
  3. Prevention and mitigation of gender-based discrimination and unequal treatment by taking specific measures.

Specification of strategic fields of action

The GAP takes the five strategic fields of action of the gender strategy up and spells them out with specific measures.

For example, in the field of action guidelines for implementing organisations and the adaptation of processes, the quality of gender-responsive approaches in outlines is used as an additional selection criterion for new projects.

Furthermore, a Community of Practice for IKI implementing organizations is being established in the field of action knowledge management. The launch of the IKI Gender Community of Practice took place in March 2024, followed by a subject specific exchange in June. Further dates for the development of the community are planned.
