Joining Forces for a Green Recovery

A regional forum on green recovery approaches in Central America and the Dominican Republic will be held on 17 and 18 May 2022.
The event brings together experts from the public and private sectors, civil society organisations and academia. It aims to provide an opportunity for professionals to share and advance successful measures for social, economic, environmental and green recovery in Central America and the Dominican Republic.
The forum will take place in Panama City and will be run as a hybrid event in Spanish. Interested participants can register using this link.
Biodiversity as a strategic asset
The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that planetary health is a prerequisite for human health. A sustainable global green recovery is therefore essential, both to address the negative consequences of the pandemic and to achieve the ambitious goals of the 2030 Agenda. The Council of Ministers of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD), which is part of the Central American Integration System (SICA), recognised this dual potential in its joint declaration on the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
As home to over 7% of the world's biodiversity, Central America and the Dominican Republic possess strategic assets that are paramount to address the impacts of the pandemic for the long-term development of the region. Green Recovery actions will create green jobs and promote sustainable development pathways that enable the region to solve urgent social and environmental challenges.
Regional Green Recovery Forum 2022
On the first day of the forum, presentations will focus on successful approaches, best practices, ideas and projects for a green recovery. High-level political representatives and experts from academia, business and civil society will discuss the importance and positive effects of green recovery measures for the region.
A sustainable green recovery approach can only succeed through the formation of holistic alliances and shared objectives between the public and private sector. Fostering such synergies will be the focus on the second day of the forum.
The results from the Green Recovery Academy in 2021, which was funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), will also be presented at the forum. This involved more than 60 participants who intensively discussed potential approaches for a green recovery in the SICA region in 2021.
In addition to insightful panel discussions, the formal launch of the second Regional Green Recovery Ideas Competition will take place at the margins of the forum.
