Global exchange of knowledge on greenhouse gas reduction

The Low Emission Capacity Building Programme held its fourth annual meeting in October and focused on the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of measures to reduce greenhouse gases.

Examples of best practice featured prominently at the fourth annual meeting of the Low Emission Capacity Building (LECB) Programme, which was held from 14 to 16 October 2014 in Brussels. Since 2011, the programme, which is being carried out by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has been promoting the development and implementation of activities to reduce greenhouse gases. As in previous years, this year's meeting was also used to support South-South exchange between the participating countries and to share lessons learned, this time with a focus on the Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of emission reductions. The event was attended by 70 participants from 23 countries and 15 organisations, including the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV (IMMA), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the British Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC).

The German Federal Environment Ministry (BMUB) is financing the LECB Programme together with the European Commission and the Australian Government. In the partner countries, the programme fosters expertise on all matters relating to MRV, low emission development strategies (LEDS) and nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs). The partner countries receive comprehensive advice tailored to their needs and are involved in specialist processes of exchange. The annual global conference provides an important platform for achieving these goals.
