Empowering youth for lake and wetland restoration
The Living Lakes Academy gives young people the opportunity to increase their capacities for freshwaters management and to become part of a global network of changemakers to shape the future of the world’s lakes and wetlands.
Empowering and strengthening youth is a key focus for the Living Lakes Academy (LLA). As one activity in the Living Lakes Biodiversity & Climate Project, financed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), the LLA is also involved capacity building. Additionally it seeks to cultivate a shared vision among the future generation of lake managers, ensuring effective protection and sustainable use of lake and wetland ecosystems.
The criteria for receiving the LLA-certificate are quite challenging. LLA students must accomplish a four to six month internship in a NGO or other organisation relevant for wetland management to gain practical experience. They must participate in international events to gather international insights, attend at least six of the webinars offered by the LLA and finish with a report on a topic relevant for lake and wetland management.
Strategic partnership with Trier University of Applied Sciences
The Global Nature Fund (GNF) have formed a strategic partnership to increase global youth engagement in lake and wetland conservation with the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld of the Trier University of Applied Sciences (Germany). This landmark collaboration reinforces their shared commitment towards the protection and sustainable use of wetlands. The agreement marks a significant step forward in empowering the next generation of conservation leaders.
The LLA anchors with Youth Engaged in Wetlands, an initiative of the Ramsar convention on Wetlands, also take part in the Living Lakes Network. Activities and events related to youth are three Sustainable Leadership Journeys (SLJ). The Third SLJ will take place in September 2024 in South Africa. 50 young people from Africa, Latin America and Asia will attend the event. "The Living Lakes Academy's leadership week provide an opportunity to network and connect with other trainees who are working in wetland and lake conservation," says Lucía Cortés who participated in last year's SLJ in Philippines.
Lucia and 13 other young lake managers have just completed their training programme and submitted the final report this summer. “I hope this programme will continue and develop a new generation of leaders for us to fight for the environment. It is in our hands to continue the legacy of the people who came before us and it is us who will benefit in our near future and into the future generations”, comment Diana Diaz, another student of the first Living Lakes Academy graduating class.
