Bonn Climate Change Conference: Assessing progress before the COP28 in Dubai

Panel at the Climate Change Conference in Bonn.

The IKI made use of the conference for a side event to discuss the current status of the IKI Strategy with the IKI community.

Dr Vera Rodenhoff, Head of the the division International Climate Action, International Energy Transition at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, welcomes the guests of the networking evening.

When the Bonn Climate Change Conference takes place in early summer, one thing is quite clear: that the preparations for the next World Climate Conference (Conference of the Parties COP) are in full swing. The two-week conference, also referred to as the session of the subsidiary bodies (SB), is an established format in international climate policy. With a view to the last COP, the delegates from the contracting countries discuss the implementation of the agreed results, and prepare decisions for the next COP.

The conference will be accompanied by numerous side events staged by organisations and initiatives on climate action. The International Climate Initiative (IKI) also used the conference in Bonn as an event of its own, to which IKI implementing organisations and their partners were invited.

The new IKI strategy: first insights and feedback from practical experience

More than 80 guests took part in the IKI networking evening and discussed the future strategic orientation of the funding programme with representatives of the IKI ministries.

Dr Philipp Behrens, Head of the division International Climate Initiative at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, provided a first insight into the current state of work of the IKI strategy as well as an overview of developments and priorities of the IKI.

The "IKI Strategy 2030", which is currently being prepared by the IKI ministries, will, among other things, define the goals of the IKI by 2030, establish an orientation framework for the actors involved, and specify the thematic and geographical focus of the funding programme.

In small groups, the participants had the opportunity to collect comments, ideas and criticism. For the IKI, it was a good opportunity to receive direct feedback from practical experience, which will be integrated into the further strategic development of the funding programme.

In small groups, the participants discussed individual aspects of the IKI Strategy 2030.
The networking evening was a good opportunity to collect perspectives, impulses and criticism from experience gathered in IKI practical applications.

15 years of IKI: A toast to the half-round birthday

Besides taking a look into the future of the IKI, it is also worth looking at the past: this year, the IKI is 15 years young - this small anniversary was also a pleasant occasion at the networking evening in Bonn to celebrate successes jointly achieved for the protection of climate and biodiversity as part of the funding programme.

In the sunshine and with a view of the Rhine, the guests were also able to continue their dialogues at the IKI dinner.
IKI networking evenings are an established exchange format: Inka Gnittke (on the right in the picture), Head of the Nature Conservation Sub-Department from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, was present at the IKI event in Bonn, among others.

Background

This year's Bonn Climate Change Conference was the 58th SB meeting. It was staged as an "interim conference" in preparation for the next World Climate Conference (COP28), which is to take place in Dubai in December. The conference took place from 5th to 15th June, the venue of the event was Bonn, as the location of the UNFCCC Secretariat.

For further information regarding SB58, please refer to the UNFCCC website.

In the past years, the IKI has established the network event format as an important platform to enable the exchange between the different IKI partners. These include the implementing organisations and their cooperation partners, the IKI ministries as well as Zukunft-Umwelt-Gesellschaft (ZUG) gGmbH as the project management agency of the IKI.
