Supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), the NDC Transport Initiative for Asia (NDC TIA) promotes an integrated approach to the decarbonisation of transport. In June, 130 participants from 15 countries gathered in Bangkok to accelerate zero-emission transport in Asia, highlighting innovative strategies from China, India, and Viet Nam.

The NDC TIA recently hosted its regional conference, ‘Low-Carbon Prosperity in Progress: Transforming Transport in Asia’, in Bangkok, Thailand. This event marked a significant milestone in the region’s journey toward achieving zero-emission transportation by mid-century, emphasizing the crucial role of early investments, policy innovation, and stakeholder engagement.

Over four days, the conference brought together 130 participants from 15 countries, including Thailand, India, Viet Nam, China, and the Philippines. With 22 sessions, including six workshops, and insights from 60 speakers, the event showcased Asia's commitment to sustainable transport solutions. Notable strategies were discussed, including China's pioneering emission standards for zero-emission trucks, India’s innovative approach to electric vehicle (EV) deployment, and Viet Nam’s ambitious e-mobility plan for Ho Chi Minh City.

Keynote speakers such as Hans-Ulrich Südbeck, Deputy Chief of Mission of the German Embassy in Bangkok, and Dr. Punya Chupanit, Director General of Thailand’s Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), highlighted the urgency of decentralising infrastructure development and enhancing walkability. Kalpana Viswanath, CEO of Safetipin, emphasized the importance of inclusive transport systems, particularly for the most vulnerable populations.

Launch of new reports

The conference also saw the launch of three new reports: A Pathway to Zero-Emission Trucking in India, Global Futures Report: Renewables for Sustainable Transport (GFR) and EV Samvaad: India’s Electric Mobility Initiatives, 2023-24

As the conference concluded, participants set a clear agenda for future collaboration, focusing on leveraging the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and setting ambitious targets for transport and renewable energy. The event underscored the importance of regional standards for electric mobility, ensuring that Asia remains on track towards a low-carbon, prosperous future.
