Contribution to the Bio Carbon Fund

The Bio Carbon Fund Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes (BioCF ISFL) is a multilateral fund supported by donor countries and managed by the World Bank. It was established as a new multilateral institution in November 2013 and supports and rewards the reduction of CO2 emissions in the land sector. Related areas are REDD+, sustainable agriculture, land use planning and land use policies. The aim is to create incentives for the development of alternative land use models for sustainable and at the same time economically viable development. The BMU supports the BioCF plus sub-fund with 35 million euro. This is intended to support transformation processes in developing countries, leading to the implementation of REDD+ strategies and the preparation of energy-based payments for the reduction of emissions. A further sub-fund is the BioCF tranche.

The contribution to the Bio Carbon Fund is an unrestricted voluntary contribution to the multilateral trust fund of the Initiative for Sustainable Forest Landscapes (ISFL). With Germany as one of the donor countries, the one-time funding was approved by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) as acting institution. The overall goal of the ISFL is to help rural communities to reduce poverty and greenhouse gas emissions and to enable sustainable development.
