Forest restoration and conservation by indigenous and local communities
The Mulongole and Timu protected areas are confronted with various threats, including over-harvesting, fires, and settlements. Additionally, conflicts have emerged with indigenous peoples, as they are perceived as invaders by managing organisations, despite their presence in the areas prior to their designation as protected. The project promotes the restoration and conservation of the forest ecosystem, which is inhabited by the indigenous people, and supports the livelihoods and incomes of this community through beekeeping and sustainable land management. The project aims to conserve 26,814 hectares through joint patrols, restore 1,020 hectares, demarcate 6,300 hectares of high conservation value forests, install 1,000 beehives, and establish 120 hectares of mixed crop and tree systems to ensure sustainable incomes and livelihoods. The project secures upscaling by integrating results into national policies and local level bylaws, and shared management plans.
