Climate-smart systems for small-scale irrigation farmers with a focus on women and youth

Northern Tanzania’s Meru district faces challenges due to unpredictable rainfall, less irrigation water, and lack of awareness about the impacts of climate change. Agriculture is the economy’s most important sector, providing jobs to 80% of the population. The project improves small-scale irrigation farmers’ resilience to the impacts of climate change in the target region. This is done by introducing climate-smart farming practices, reducing water pollution, and strengthening farmers' organisations. The project provides training to women and youth in sustainable agricultural production and leadership positions. The train-the-trainer approach for training farmers in water-efficient farming and the use of demonstration areas provide the opportunity to replicate these cost-effective and climate-friendly measures in other regions.
