Sustainable climate finance for the preservation of biodiversity – BIOCLIM finance
The project contributes to biodiversity conservation and climate protection by addressing local drivers of biodiversity loss, land and forest degradation in the Casamance region. The project is combining capacity building of civil society organisations through support to local planning with access to finance with a strong focus on access for the local private sector through new locally responsive models and mechanisms. The project includes two approaches, combining pilot activities with capacity building elements aimed in part at building the capacity of local actors to plan with implement resilience building activities. It is sharing the pilot experiences with other national and regional CSOs, institutional financial partners and local private sector actors.

State of implementation/results
- Throughout 2025: A feasibility study was conducted for the development of micro-projects in the selected communities. Selected communities were invited to submit ideas for micro-projects that would strengthen their resilience or increase the resilience of ecosystems. 14 priority micro-projects for adaptation were identified which were then further developed. The feasibility study confirmed the relevance of and need for an innovative blended financing mechanism accessible to particularly women and young people to strengthen local resilience. A detailed concept for an innovative blended finance mechanism was developed together local financial institutions such as the Senegalese Agricultural Bank (La Banque Agricole –LBA). --*
- July 2025: A participatory diagnostic workshop was conducted in the departments of Kolda, Sédhiou, and Ziguinchor in collaboration with the regional development agency and local authorities to establish the process for developing Territorial Climate and Energy Plans. Among the participants were elected officials, technical and financial partners, CSOs as well as women's and youth groups. A participatory analysis of climate vulnerabilities was conducted. Main risks such as droughts, bush fires, salinization and erosion were mapped and corresponding adaptation priorities identified.
- August 2024: A field mission was conducted to raise awareness among mayors and administrative authorities in the region. Their engagement and political support is essential for updating local development plans and to ensure that those updates are converted into municipal priority action.
- July 2024: Official project launch in Zinginchor, Casamance. During the 2-day workshop, all key stakeholders in the Casamance region were informed about the project's objectives and activities - aiming to create a common understanding and collective support for the project. Participants included local authorities, civil society organisations, community representatives, technical and financial partners, and the local private sector.
- June 2024: Meeting with relevant stakeholders from the Casamance region to share information about the project. Stakeholders included local government representatives, the regional development agency and civil society. Based on a set of selection criteria – taking into account ecological and economic vulnerability as well as commitment to climate action – they chose two communities for each of the three project regions (Kolda, Sédhiou and Ziguinchor) as priority intervention zones.
