Nurseries for Youth Development Project (NYDP): From tree nurseries to implemented farm forestry and afforestation
KENAFF addresses farm forestry and reforestation challenges in the context of its Farm Forestry and Afforestation Programme (2021-2030). The AHA and KENAFF cooperation, through KENAFF county associations, establishes up to 20 youth-led tree nurseries in 6 selected counties. The target customers for quality planting material shall be local farmers, local administrators, government institutions, NGOs, and civil society organizations, involved in forestry measures. The project includes capacity building, establishing up to 20 tree nurseries and promoting sustainable practices. Workshops and training programs cover topics such as agroforestry, nursery management, biodiversity conservation, etc. The nurseries serve as centers of excellence and generate income for KENAFF county associations. The project aligns with the national goal of achieving 30% tree cover by 2032 and it contributes to climate adaptation and resilience.

State of implementation/results
- Land lease agreements were concluded for all six main tree nurseries for five years at zero cost. This agreement not only extends beyond the duration of the project, but also contributes significantly to the sustainability of the intended impact after the end of the project. The leased lands are linked to agricultural institutes (e.g. Kaguru Agricultural Training Centre, Meru County, Kenya), ensuring continuous support and integration with the local communities and broader research efforts.
- Management staff and their deputies have been recruited for all nurseries, with candidates selected from the KENAFF internship school to provide valuable opportunities for emerging professionals.
- A training manual was created as a guide for the nursery managers.
- KENAFF signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the FAO Agriculture & Forestry Facility to strengthen the visibility and competitiveness of smallholder farmer organisations.
