Increasing resilience and rural livelihoods of most vulnerable farmer households in Antanambao Manampotsy district, Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the countries most affected by climate change, exposed to natural risks such as cyclones, floods and droughts. The project aims to contribute to the implementation of the National Program of Action for Climate Change Adaptation by increasing the resilience of vulnerable farmer communities in the District of Antanambao-Manampotsy. The project will promote climate adapted agricultural practices, contribute to improving water infrastructure and establish community committees on local climate change adaptation. Focusing on the grassroots level, the project addresses adaptation needs identified at community level and aims to develop a replicable concept for transferring the project approach to other regions. It strengthens the capacities and cooperation between key stakeholders on the local, regional and national levels to foster replication and upscaling of local climate change adaption plans.

  • Conduct studies to identify most suitable crops and causes of deforestation and identify mitigation measures.
  • Building and strengthening the capacity of six groups of farmers in Mahela.
  • Organizing biodiversity training for volunteers/employees.
  • Conducting Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (EVCA) training with 30 participants in the project region.
  • Conducting refresher trainings on plant association and vegetation cover as well as a refresher training on the production of various bio-pesticides to control plant pests and a training on planting vegetable gardens and growing vegetables.
  • Distribution of agricultural tools to 30 particularly vulnerable farming households (24 women and 6 men) and vegetable seeds to 79 particularly active farmers (35 women and 44 men).
  • The MRC Disaster Risk Reduction Officer, community committee members and MRC volunteers conducted climate change awareness campaigns in elementary school in Mahela Municipality and Manampotsy. A total of 650 school children and teachers took part in the awareness campaigns. In addition, awareness campaigns on climate change and environmental protection were organized for adults in six villages in the municipality of Mahela.
  • Practical training sessions were held on how to make ecological KAMADO stoves. The stove helps to cover the fire and significantly reduce the amount of wood needed to prepare meals, compared to the traditional method of cooking on an open fire, and is made from locally available material.
