Climate Change Adaptation in the Caribbean: The EbA-Facility

The small island developing states (SIDS ) in the Caribbean are heavily affected by the consequences of climate change due to their geographical positions. Intact and resilient coastal ecosystems help to improve the protection of people in the region from severe weather events such as hurricanes. The project provides technical and financial support to SIDS in implementing ecosystem-based adaptation measures (EbA). The EbA Facility, which is set up as a repayment fund under the auspices of the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), is a flexible financing instrument set up for this purpose. Measures and individual projects with an average volume of around 0.5 to 1.5 million US dollars are funded with selective capacity support, within the framework of calls for proposals. The individual projects in the SIDS can also network, share experiences and learn from each other through events such as workshops.

State of implementation/results

As of 15th March 2024, the EbA Facility had selected 34 individual projects with a financing volume of around USD 45.5 million in 11 Caribbean countries for funding. Of these, 21 projects are currently being implemented, 13 projects have already been completed.
The fourth Call for Proposals was completed in the second half of 2023. Of the approximately 60 applicants, seven are selected for funding by the EbA Facility.
So far, around 21,000 people have benefited directly from the project measures (at least 7,000 of them women). To date, at least 11,700 hectares of coastal ecosystems relevant to adaptation have been improved and/or better protected as part of the individual projects implemented.
Since its inception, the EbA Facility has successfully conducted various thematic workshops that served to build knowledge and capacity, but also to network the organisations it supports. In February 2023, around 50 participants came together in the Dominican Republic to expand their knowledge on mangrove and coral restoration.
